Marewrew (pronounced: Ma-leoo-leoo) is a female vocal group that performs traditional Ainu songs. The music of the long-suppressed Ainu people of northern Japan has become a particular focus of Pingipung"s output in recent years. Following various re-releases by Umeko Ando - the late grande dame of Ainu music - the spotlight now turns to the a cappella work of Marewrew. Incidentally, Marewrew means butterfly in Ainu. Attentive listeners may recognise some of the voices, as several members also performed as backing singers on Umeko Ando"s recordings. Their unaccompanied renditions cast a new light on the songs that have been passed down orally for generations. Ukouk means round singing - a reference to the tightly woven canon form in which Marewrew perform and record. One voice begins, the others follow in close succession, slightly out of phase: not unlike dub echoes, except these loops are sung, not produced in the studio. These short pieces often unfurl into mesmerising trances (Sikata Kuykuy, Honkaya) that seem to spin endlessly. If voices could dance, this is how it would sound. The album culminates in unexpected turns - into pop (Yaykatekara) or cumbia-like rhythms (Kanerenren) - with percussion and Oki Kano"s distinctive Tonkori harp. Ukouk is a selection of Marewrew"s work from the past 13 years. Oki Kano contributed unreleased material and new versions of songs previously issued only in Japan.
